We Did It! Thank You for supporting Maker Day on Saturday, August 3rd!
With special thanks to Sankofa Fund, River City Company & my colleagues with the Emerging Producers Program (Courtenay Cholovich, Randi Franklin, Pedro Abriles, Briana Jones, Esther Lovingood & Dawn Hjelseth) for giving – whether money or time – to help make this event a success for our entire community. Together, we are more! May what we created at Maker Day ripple out in Chattanooga, TN for many, many summers to come. 🎉
Did you know that in 2024, Chattanooga’s 4th Floor Makerspace celebrated 10 years
as one of the only library-situated makerspaces in state of Tennessee?
In celebration of this, on Saturday, August 3rd, Chattanooga’s Downtown Library was filled with four levels of fun for the entire family for the inaugural Maker Day! Recognize that when a Makerspace exists in a community, information, design, technology, and the arts are able to cross-pollinate freely in urban spaces contributing to a more creative, connected and engaged public. The corridor between Broad Street and 11th came alive with life-size lawn games sponsored by River City Company and buskers from SoundCorps Chattanooga, while inside became a creative wonderland with something for everyone – cyanotypes, screenprinting, zine making, music, button-making, mural making and the opportunity to meet or buy from dozens of makers in real time!
Over 250 attendees of all ages enjoyed an interactive exhibit of the 10 year history of the 4th Floor Makerspace; live demos, talks and workshops from today’s avid 4th Floor-made brands, businesses, artisans; and “2034: Chattanooga in the Making” which future-casted the next 10 years of making with activity labs. It will be exciting to see Maker Day in 2034. Many good seeds planted!

Thank YOU Local Sponsors!

How Did We Spread the Word About Maker Day?
Make good things. SHARE IT WIDELY.
Our roster of sponsors experienced the excitement of Maker Day by becoming one of the hundreds of families, creatives, technologists, artists, entrepreneurs, and neighbors that gathered to celebrate the 4th Floor in its 10th year. With our creatively crafted event, community was at the forefront of innovation and imagination. So, how did we share the experience with neighbors and other makers? The Maker Day Media Kit was pivotal and served as a one-stop hub for social media tags, approved press images, graphics, post copy and more. Make it easy for people to share and they will. Boom!
If you’re planning an event like Maker Day, be sure to reach out to local radio stations who will often be delighted to talk to you, especially if your event is in some way benefitting the community. In my case? We sat down with Ray Bassett of Scenic Roots at WUTC 88.1FM to talk about the 10 years’ milestone plus share the invaluable resources on the 4th Floor. Tune into the episodes here:

Making a
Maker Day
Makerspaces are all about making change. Making something out of upcycled materials. Making something move. Making some noise. Making an impact. Making new possibilities. But, most importantly, making community. Makerspaces often become community hubs that encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing, which can lead to more robust local networks of innovation. These spaces not only support entrepreneurs, brands and businesses but also facilitate partnerships with other stakeholders who use the space to encourage skills in creative strategy and design thinking for youth + adults.

Will There Be Food Onsite?
Fingers crossed! We are still in the final stages of planning and hope some of our invited friends from the infamous Food Truck Fridays will join us. If not, the closest food options are Jimmy John’s, Peet’s, Pickle Barrel, Food City on Broad St & Alimentari.
